National News Taris Poll

Here's your chance to have your say and win!

The question: Should we rescue the 500 citizens of Taris?

The background: For years we believed the only survivors on Taris were three people known as Hilto, Majool and Lenna. There they were, valiantly living alone on a doomed experimental island down in the wild, freezing southern ocean and they’d seen nobody else for years. Even if a boat went past they wouldn't see it, thanks to the dome that kept them warm and snug. But then! Whammo! Out of the blue comes this message: I am Vima, one of the 500 inhabitants of Taris. We need your help and some of us want to leave.

Now we know from the sat pics how precarious the world of Taris has become. Should we rescue the 500 citizens of Taris?

Have your say. Answer this question and explain the reasons behind your response. The best ten comments will be rewarded. Click here for prize details and important information about how to enter.

A zillion times no. They went there of their own free will. They knew the risks. Let them die!!

    Yes
We should rescue them. There’s gotta be young kids in that mix of 500. We can’t leave ‘em to get blown into the sea if that stupid dome collapses like it looks like doing any second. They didn’t choose to go there.

Yes. Reluctantly. Must say I wish we didn’t have to spend the dough. It’s going to cost money we don’t have and can’t afford. But we can’t leave them there. Enough people died in the past 40 years since Taris was created that we couldn’t save so if can save this lot then let’s do it.

Why take in more refugees who’ll steal our jobs and be a drain on this country? Let Aussie take them I say.

No! How do we know these people are for real? How do we know that message from this Vima person is the real deal? Could be a huge great hoax from a sick mind.

Of course we must attempt at least to rescue them, then and only then can we learn the true story about what has been going on, and why they were kept there. It may be a risk but who could knowingly live with haven given up on someone they could have saved.

I definatly think you should rescue them. For all we know there are children there. No one asked them if they wanted to go there. They could be urging to get out of there. They may have ways of living that could benefit human kind. I say take the risk.

  8. Absolutely!
Every one of those souls deserves a chance to be saved. Personally, i could not live with my consious knowing that we had the capacity to save them, but chose not to due to politicalor financial reasons. This is a question of ethics.

If we 'believed' then it wasn't fact. First we need to see these sat pics to consider our options and then those who are curious and want to help can go... let the doom-sayers stay at home, who needs them? lol

  10. Yes of course we should most of the people on that island won't have chosen to go there they will have been born there and have had no choice if we don't rescue them they will most likely die, besides they would be able to help us they have lived their lives growing and hunting their own food so my awnser would be yes yes yes yes

  11. Yes, rescue them, but they will need to go through major debrief and rehabilitation and then be sent to areas that can use their expertise in self-sufficiency and sustainability. They may not wish to be split, but will be more valuable if they can be spread throughout the mainland communities.

  12. I think we should. Although the inhabitants of Taris chose to move there, there is now a new generation of people who, regardless of what their parents thought, have their own opinions and want to leave. How can we deny them when we have no idea what is happening there? Things could be worse that we thought! Not only are we able to help them, but we can learn from their experience and they from ours. They deserve to have the freedom to choose. Who are we to decide otherwise?

As proud citizens of Aotearoa we must rise to the challenge and rescue these inhabitants. Why should they be made to suffer for the foolish choice made by Hilto, Majool and Lenna years before?

  14. Yes, they deserve a second chance as we the living, the survivors of the pandemics, have also been given a second chance. We need new blood, we need to rebuild. Save the People of Taris, bring them here and let them start a new life.
